The trick is to make your mind work for you, not against you." This should be posted in every gym around the country. If you take this simple approach of "This may feel weird or uncomfortable, but I can do it!" then you are on the right track. NO, this does not mean you push yourself to injury or to the point of passing out, but you can learn the limits of your body. If you feel light headed, take a moment to rest and concentrate on your breathing. The more stable your breathing as well as the focus on those breaths will help prepare your mind for what is ahead. The main point of this post is to get people to realize that the best results you will ever achieve in your life sometimes come from uncomfortable situations. The body is an amazing machine with unmatched adaptation abilities and if you use that to your advantage you will gain both confidence and trust in yourself. These principles can be applied to business, parenting, social interaction, and most anything else in life that you can think of. DO NOT be afraid to fail, be afraid to regret the shot you never took! Dieting sucks.... "nutritional habit changes" are a completely different story. In order to make these changes you have to commit to yourself and your family that you want to be around longer and live a fuller, happier life. The trick is to have a PLAN that will set you up for success. You have to show people the light at the end of the tunnel and then give them a road map to reach that light. You can warn them of unforeseen obstacles along the way that will test their character and commitment, but solid preparation gives them more than a fighter's chance. If one is to commit to a personal training/nurtional program, I firmly believe you should know exactly what you want going in, rather than taking the "I'd like to get in better shape so I'll see where this takes me" approach. You don't need a specific number weight loss goal. It is much easier and more beneficial to set small goals along the way. "I want to be able to do 10 pushups" is a great goal for someone who is in moderate shape but lacking strength. A personal trainer should be able to evaluate that goal and challenge you with a realistic timeline for accomplishing that challenge.
Having once been out of shape myself, I find there's nothing more inspiring than seeing overweight people taking charge of their lives, trying to improve themselves. Anyone can be born athletic. There's almost no accomplishment in that, or in having parents who support their athleticism. But there's something incredibly great seeing an overweight person taking charge of his or her life. I wish more people would do it. There's not much advice I can offer. I think AZ_Dude gave great advice (or at least the advice I would give) about losing weight, and tarragon man gave great advice on how to feed your family cheaply. When trying to lose weight, it seems like exercise does 20% of the task. 80% of losing weight seems to be in how and what you eat. Like you're already doing, I recommend portion control. Or just reducing your portions. We Americans eat portions that are way too big for us, and we rationalize that, for some wacky reason, we need it. I think most people really only need half of what they eat. Once you hit the right portions, you can start to see the difference almost on a daily basis. And, like AZ_Dude said, stay away from the over-processed foods. Whenever I've had to lose weight, I found that the more vegetables I ate, and the less processed carbs I ate, the more I lost. When I was losing weight, I became the King of Salads. So stay at it. Find ways to find joy in what you're doing. Take pride in all the little accomplishments. Look for ways to give yourself good, positive feelings.
I don't mean to be an ass. But as a de-conditioned individual and with a passive life style it is typical to find reasons not to work out. Like "everything i find is cookie cutter workouts for normal people". Basic rules will apply. If you are in very bad shape start walking. With vcery bad shape I mean you cannot get into a squatting position and up (without any added weight) or cannot do a single pushup with knees down and similar stuff. Walking is great for starting to build the base. Diabetes or not. Obviously fix your diet - as a diabetic I hope you are already eating rather healthy. If you have the strength to do basic stuff I wholeheartedly recommend any old strength training program just take it easy on it as in don't rush the gains. Typical linear progression program works so that you do just a few compound (several joints involved) movements with good technique for 3-5 sets of 5 (or so). You add more weight next time and repeat. For weak person starting the key is to start light enough and to have a way to make small enough increments. Please describe your current condition in more detail and we can help better (age/height/weight/gender/what can you do now). But the key point is at the head of my message - I seriously doubt you need that different workout. Of course stuff like pull ups are pointless if you cannot do a single one. Just do it. Walk, swim whatever. Start. That is the hardest part. rest is easy.

The one time in my life I was in "really good" shape was when I was in college, about 16 years ago. By "really good shape", I mean "take my shirt off at the beach and be proud of the way I look". Today, as a 37 year old, I definitely wouldn't be considered "obese" or even "out of shape", but definitely not in "really good shape". I'd love to get back into the shape I was for those couple years of college, but I know how much time and effort I put into getting that way, and I also know how much more I cared about being in really good shape back then. I was in college. I was superficial and vain and wanted to be in good shape so I could get laid. How I looked to the opposite sex was very important to me. I had a very flexible schedule and a lot of free time. I could and did spend 3 hours at the gym 5-6 times a week. I didn't have a lot of money and the food wasn't very good anyway, so it was easy to not eat a lot. But today, I just don't have the time. There is no way I can spend 3 hours at the gym every day. And, Now that I've grown up, the vanity has waned and being in really good shape in order to attract the opposite sex is not nearly as important to me because I don't care about getting laid as much and also, I've learned to get laid and attract women without relying on how "in shape" my body is. but even back then, when I was much younger and had better metabolism, and cared more, and spent 3 hours working out every day, I STILL wasn't in "amazing" shape. Just pretty good shape. So, what hope do I possibly have for getting in really good shape today? It almost seems pointless to even try.
